New Year's Greetings, 2006 (in English & German)

Moin-moin!

Gitta and I wish all our friends near and far a happy

new year in 2006. Both of us can look back on an

eventful 2005. It was most difficult for Gitta to be

away from Northfield for nine solid months, the

longest time since we started our waffling between

Minnesota and Flensburg.

But this time there was many a task waiting for us in

Schleswig-Holstein. We got the chance to facilitate

the departure of the McNally Smith College of Music

from Luebeck as smoothly as possible. We're planning

a cooperative project with the Music Conservatory

there and the Americans from St. Paul, Minnesota.

A special joy for me was receiving the 'Johannes

Gillhoff Society's Prize' in June, with friend from

both the USA and Germany present.

Then Hurricane Katrina brought a rocky adventure: In

conjunction with the Schleswig-Holstein Newspaper

Publishing House (sh:z), two friends, Erhard (Birdy)

Boettcher and Rick Esse, and I traveled into the

devastated areas around New Orleans. We met many

memorable people and made formal contact with The

Times-Picayune newspaper. The trip made possible

research for reports and for the distribution of

131,000 Euro, that were donated in a sh:z flood victim

pledge drive. For that there will also be a gala

evening in Flensburg on the 28th of January. Editor

in Chief, Jim Amoss will be there as the guest of

honor, and all of you are invited as well.

Gitta und ich wünschen allen Freunden nah und fern

ein glückliches neues Jahr 2006. Wir beide blicken

zurück auf ein ereignisreiches 2005. Dabei war es

vor allem für Gitta schwer, diesmal neun Monate

ununterbrochen von Northfield fort zu sein - die

längste Zeit seit unserem 1992 begonnenen Pendeln

zwischen Minnesota und Flensburg.

Aber diesmal warteten in Schleswig-Holstein viele

Aufgaben. So ging es darum, den möglichen Abschied

des McNally Smith Colleges of Music in Lübeck

möglichst sanft zu gestalten; wir planen mit derdortigen Musikhochschule auf Projektbasis eine

zukuenftige Zusammenarbeit mit den Amerikanern in

St. Paul, Minnesota.

Eine besondere Freude war es für mich, im Juni den

Preis der Johannes-Gillhoff-Gesellschaft entgegenzu-

nehmen - in Anwesenheit von Freunden aus den USA und

Deutschland.

Dann brachte der Hurríkan Katrina ein erschütterndes

Abenteuer: Im Auftrag des Schleswig-Holsteinischen

Zeitungsverlages (sh:z)fuhr ich mit meinen Freunden

Erhard (Boeddee)Böttcher und Rick Esse Ende November

in das Katastrophengebiet von New Orleans. Wir

trafen viele eindrucksvolle Menschen und knüpften

Kontakte mit der Zeitung "The Times-Picayune". Es

ging um Recherchen für Reportagen und die Verteilung

von 131 000 Euro einer großen sh:z-Spendenaktion für

Flutopfer. Dazu gibt es am 28. Januar einen Galaabend

mit Künstlern in Flensburg. Chefredakteur Jim Amoss

kommt als Ehrengast, und auch Ihr seid alle herzlich

eingeladen.
