The following essay is by Dr. Don Heinrich Tolzmann, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the new Stoltenberg Institute of Forty-Eighter Studies. Well known as “Mr. German-Americana,” due to his many contributions to U.S.-German relations and the field of German-American Studies, he spoke on German contributions to America at the White House on October 1, 1987 when President Reagan signed the proclamation in the Rose Garden declaring the 6th of October as German-American Day.
