Bipartisan Government for Germany

Retired German Ambassador Stefan Schlüter led a discussion titled “Germany’s Dramatic Zeitenwende: Setting new priorities in foreign, security, and energy policy” at the Germanic-American Institute (gaimn.org) in St. Paul, Minnesota on October 28.

In the Q & A session, the idea of a dramatic change of personnel in the running of Germany was raised. It was suggested that Chancellor Scholz should govern for the next 18 months with a first-rate bipartisan group of politicians. To cite one example, someone with a more inquiring philosophical perspective (Dr. Habeck) might replace Federal President Steinmeier. Experts such as Arnold Petersen (Lübecker Nachrichten, Fed. Pres. St. is a bureaucrat) and Stephan Richter (SHZ) are afraid that Habeck might resign as Secretary of Economic Affairs because of all the childish infighting that has been going on recently.
